Many children who violate the law are imprisoned and sentenced for up to eight years without the possibility of probation before 80 % of their time has elapsed. The project supported the government’s efforts to establish a justice system specifically adapted to children, so that children can receive a non-custodial educational measure: the juvenile offenders must make amends to their victims and their communities. 2 570 stakeholders such as judges, policemen, prosecutors and prison staff in the judicial system were trained to improve their understanding of restorative juvenile justice. New practices, such as toy libraries, have been introduced within prisons and institutions where children serve alternative sentences. It is a great achievement that the Ecuadorian justices system has included the restorative approach in its objectives.
